A quick history
Polybutylene (Poly B) is a flexible plumbing pipe that was used in homes throughout North America from the mid-1970’s to the mid-1990’s. Production stopped around 1996 when it was discovered that the pipe joints were failing - often. Since then, the majority of insurance companies have recognized the danger of property damage and have begun to crack down on homes containing Poly B and even refusing to insure.
What does it look like?
Poly B piping is most typically grey in colour but can also be white or blue. To confirm that it is in fact Poly B piping, look for PB2110 stamped along the length of the pipe.
Where can I find it?
Poly B can be anywhere in your home, but some great places to check if you have it is in your mechanical room connected to your water heater, underneath your sinks, and in your basement ceiling.
